Description

Subversion turns history.

As the technicians of siege warfare learned long ago, the favored method of breaching a fortress is to sap its walls. So too is subversion the favored method of bringing down authority. Subversion has always marched arm-in-arm with art. As the great Civil Rights leaders looked to Thoreau’s doctrine of civil disobedience, as the great muckrakers looked toward Blake’s investigative poetic wanderings, as the great feminists looked to the stoic passion of Dickinson and Lowell—so too do we reflect, with this portfolio, on the marriage of subversion and art.

The provocative social anarchist Mikhail Bakunin said that Man had only two instincts: to think, and to rebel. Surely, without thought, rebellion is a meaningless thrash; and without rebellion, thought is inconsequential. Art, for many, has been the answer. Art communicates not just to the present, but to the future. It resonates with our subversive instinct and has the power to turn history.

Thus, with one eye on the past as we forge onward, we are proud to present these broadsides of Subversion.
