  • The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

It is no coincidence that The Great Gatsby is the American novel most often taught in the rest of the world. "It is our novel, how we present ourselves,” said American literary scholar James West, “[Fitzgerald] captured and distilled the essence of the American spirit."

We are extraordinarily honored to announce that Thornwillow Press, with the blessing of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s family and estate, is publishing this greatest American novel, The Great Gatsby, in a limited edition, letterpress, hand-bound volume.

  • Honesty: A Broadside Portfolio (Vol. 2 No. 11)

One could be forgiven for thinking that honesty is a quaint relic of the past. Increasingly, the public has come to expect deception as the norm. It is everywhere: we are deceived by politicians, by corporations, by the press. This runs the gamut from bald-faced lies to manipulations of the truth. The latter is perhaps the most disquieting. When honesty is violated in subtle ways, it can feel as though there is no recourse to the truth.

Yet, honesty remains important. Telling the whole truth has changed the world. However, the truth only has power when the public believes it. Thus, it is important for the most prominent among us to be honest, to expose the same injustice and corruption which lies at the root of our cynicism. In this spirit, we present this collection of instances where powerful people expressed powerful honesty.

All broadside leaflets are hand crafted and letterpress printed on archival stock. From recipes to poetry, prose, and quotations, Thornwillow broadsides put literature in your pocket.

  • Universe: A Broadside Portfolio (Vol. 2 No. 12)

In the era of GPS, we think we know where we are. Yet, the system often fails us—stories abound of GPS leading people the wrong way. We think of our location as a binary: we know where we are or we don’t. Before the invention of GPS, location was considered a spectrum. People knew generally, rather than specifically, where they were. We have made great strides in physically orienting ourselves in the world, and in the broader solar system, but this is only part of the larger issue of belonging.

Knowing where we are is not the same as knowing where we should be. Such questions have been addressed by philosophers and theologians from time immemorial. In recognition of their work, we present this survey of thoughts on our place in the universe.

  • The Greats, Abridged: A Broadside Portfolio (Vol. 3 No. 2)

Nothing is as expansive as great literature. A good novel transports you to a dreamlike state, good poetry rings in the back of your mind, and a good turn of phrase inspires you like nothing else. Yet, great literature can also be daunting. How should we approach T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land or Shakespeare’s Hamlet, let alone Proust’s À La Recherche Du Temps Perdu or Joyce’s Ulysses? Sometimes, an abridged version is helpful. Sometimes, we need a taste before we sit for a feast. Moreover, sometimes we need to see failure before we appreciate success, from the tortured writer’s block found in Kafka’s diary, to the self-doubt that causes great writers to burn their own work. With this in mind, we present these vignettes of the greats, abridged.

  • Dangerous Speech: A Broadside Portfolio (Vol. 3 No. 3)

Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of Western society, yet in these past few tumultuous years, even this fundamental principle has been shaken. Our speech is corralled on social media platforms, our ideas encrusted in ideological caves. College students demand “safe spaces” where offensive speech is not permitted, and even the President likens the free press to enemies of the nation. Alternately condemned on all sides as dangerous, free speech is at stake. But our times are not entirely unique. Social turmoil has existed before, and has often similarly been accompanied by questions about free speech–when it should be free and when it must be censored. In celebration of the indispensable and exalted value of free speech, we present ten vignettes of oratory, writing, and thought that were, in their time, considered dangerous speech.

  • Mystery: A Broadside Portfolio (Vol. 3 No. 4)

Nothing captivates us like a good mystery—that which demands investigation and makes possible the great human quest for discovery. It’s why we puzzle and ponder impossible riddles, obsess over unsolved crimes, and why we mythologize the masterminds of detective fiction and the literary demigods they create. Albert Einstein wrote that “the most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious,” and called it “the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science.” Our fascination with the unknown is matched only by an insatiable desire to explore. And, as anyone who has ever met a child knows, so-called answers often lead only to more questions. In an age when the internet awaits at our fingertips to answer our every passing curiosity, there is still so much to explore, every question yielding to a further, greater mystery.

  • The History of the English Language: A Broadside Portfolio (Vol. 3 No. 1)

Studying the etymology of English words and the structure of the language itself is akin to delving into an epic tale, complete with battles and conquests, knights and kings, invented vocabulary and great orators to inspire the masses. It draws from a rich and vast array of peoples and idioms, including Latin from the Roman Empire, Germanic from the Anglo-Saxon tribes, French aristocracy, Spanish, and even some Turkish amongst others, spanning over hundreds of years. Language by nature is dynamic and constantly developing, and English has had a particularly exciting journey, developing into a “mingle-mangle” of slangs, swears, contractions, and cultural expressions from all around the world. Even more exciting is that English is still growing and adapting the same as a living organism, free to fit the needs of the modern era. Therefore, as English hurtles into the future, please join us as we reflect on the lively and fascinating History of the English Language.
