In this age of virtual relationships and intangible communication—when books can be turned on and off with a switch—we believe that the printed word, beautiful and well crafted, is more powerful than ever before. We are printers and publishers of handmade books, and for over 35 years, we have been committed to advancing a modern day arts and crafts movement that celebrates the written word. Welcome to Thornwillow.

Our mission is to teach and perpetuate the related arts and crafts of the written word. To that end, in all of our work, we endeavor to create experiences which enhance the relationship between the reader and the written word, as well as foster a community for all those who care about the place of the printed word in modern society.
Rooted in the traditional crafts of printing and fine bookbinding, the Thornwillow tree has three main branches: Thornwillow Press, Thornwillow Makers, and the Thornwillow Institute and Makers Village, all based in a complex of historic brick buildings in downtown Newburgh, New York. Our paper, printing, binding, and books provide a lasting and powerful method of communicating and preserving ideas in the modern world, and we invite you to join us in living a life of letters—whether that be as a reader, a writer, or a community leader.
