It has been said of Pulitzer Prize winning author John Updike that he was one of, if not the most important novelist of the late 20th century. He was also a Harvard graduate, and deposited the vast archives of his manuscripts, books, photographs, correspondence and artwork at Harvard’s Houghton Library. On one of his visits, Rodney Dennis, Curator of Manuscripts at Houghton, introduced Updike to Luke Pontifell, and a great collaboration was born. Updike proposed three “wonderful, beautiful” stories that appeared in the New Yorker: “Personal Archaeology,” “Free” and “The Guardian”.
