Description

Le Bateau Ivre fits into a broad collection of Thornwillow publications that celebrate the lives and works of great artists and authors.

This portfolio divides Arthur Rimbaud’s 100 line poem, Le Bateau Ivre, into 25 folders. A drawing by Thierry Despont accompanies each 4-line stanza, as well as the colophon and cover page with portrait of Rimbaud at 17. Despont’s artwork encapsulates the disordered senses which Rimbaud believed were neccesary for a poet to understand the human experience. The poem, printed in the original french, with an English translation by Louis Varèse, is preceeded by an introduction by Despont.
