Description

“The Etchings and Drypoints” is the second portfolio in George Cochrane’s Newburgh Suite. This collection consists of three intaglio prints presented in a paste paper and cloth portfolio. “The Etchings and Drypoints” portfolio is released in conjunction with the first Newburgh Suite Portfolio, “The Woodcuts”. These two print portfolios were conceived and produced alongside George Cochrane’s hand-lettered and copiously illustrated Thornwillow edition of Dante’s Inferno. This project celebrates the 750th anniversary of Dante’s birth.

In this portfolio, each etching has been made based on a photograph taken by the artist in and around Newburgh, NY. The images draw on the celestial and terrestrial motifs of Dante’s La Commedia, capturing Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory in a city whose rise, fall, and incremental resurrection echoes Dante’s epic literary saga. The artist pulled the prints himself at the press on our cylinder etching press.

The three images– “Bannerman Castle,” “Crane at Ferry Landing,” and “Calvary Presbyterian Church”–were hand-printed by the artist directly from the copper plates on heavy archival paper and presented in a yellow cloth and purple paste-paper portfolio.
