The livre d'artiste portfolio is comprised of 29 folders, 25 of which make up Rimbaud's poem, Le Bateau Ivre ("The Drunken Boat"), printed in the original french, with an English translation by Louis Varèse. Thierry Despont has written an introduction and created 28 illustrations to accompany the poem. In a powerful blending of the arts, Despont's drawings add a haunting dimension to the young poet's genius.
Le Bateau Ivre fits into a broad collection of Thornwillow publications that celebrate the lives and works of great artists and authors.
This portfolio divides Arthur Rimbaud's 100 line poem, Le Bateau Ivre, into 25 folders. A drawing by Thierry Despont accompanies each 4-line stanza, as well as the colophon and cover page with portrait of Rimbaud at 17. Despont's artwork encapsulates the disordered senses which Rimbaud believed were neccesary for a poet to understand the human experience. The poem, printed in the original french, with an English translation by Louis Varèse, is preceeded by an introduction by Despont.
