Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of Western society, yet in these past few tumultuous years, even this fundamental principle has been shaken. Our speech is corralled on social media platforms, our ideas encrusted in ideological caves. College students demand “safe spaces” where offensive speech is not permitted, and even the President likens the free press to enemies of the nation. Alternately condemned on all sides as dangerous, free speech is at stake. But our times are not entirely unique. Social turmoil has existed before, and has often similarly been accompanied by questions about free speech–when it should be free and when it must be censored. In celebration of the indispensable and exalted value of free speech, we present ten vignettes of oratory, writing, and thought that were, in their time, considered dangerous speech.
