Design & Production Associate (Typographic Production)

Thornwillow Press is seeking a Design & Production Associate to join our studio. This is an entry-level, apprenticeship-style position for someone serious about typography, design, and the craft of fine printing.

All design at the Press is developed under a unified artistic direction. In this role, you will work closely with the Creative Director to execute and refine that vision across books, printed materials, and digital communications. Over time, you will develop a deep sensitivity to classical typography and become a key contributor to the visual and material quality of our work.

Responsibilities

  • Execute typographic layouts for books, wrappers, and printed materials
  • Prepare files for plate-making and production with precision and care
  • Develop layouts for eblasts, website updates, and digital communications
  • Assist with product photography and visual presentation
  • Maintain and organize design files and project assets
  • Support marketing initiatives through visual execution
  • Participate in quality control, including review and numbering of finished books
  • Collaborate with operations and production teams to ensure accuracy and timing
  • Pitch in where needed across the studio during busy periods

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
  • Familiarity with WordPress and email platforms (e.g., Metrillo) is a plus
  • Strong interest in classical typography and fine printing
  • Exceptional attention to detail (spacing, kerning, composition)
  • Organized, efficient, and able to track multiple projects
  • Able to take direction and work within an established aesthetic
  • Focused, steady, and comfortable working independently
  • A genuine enthusiasm for books, craft, and the printed object

This is someone who is attentive, disciplined, and eager to learn. They work quickly but carefully, take direction without ego, and are motivated by the pursuit of quality.

Compensation & Structure

This position begins with a training period (typically 3–6 months) at $160/day, with increases based on performance, ability, and level of responsibility.

Positions typically begin at 3–4 days per week, with the potential to grow over time.

For candidates with prior experience, compensation may be adjusted accordingly.

This is an on-site role at our Press in Newburgh, New York.
