Wendell Garrett explores the philosophy of freedom as seen by one of its greatest champions, and in doing so provides insight into what makes a great mind, and the processes undergone by the founding fathers as they molded our young nation.
Printed on paper handcrafted especially for the edition at The Cardinal Mill, Moravia. The photogravure of the Houdon Bust is courtesy of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The photogravure of Monticello was taken by H. Andrew Johnson and is courtesy of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation. The Photogravure plates were engraved by Lothar Osterburg. The plates were all hand-inked and hand-pulled by Jan Mauler. The text was set in Adobe Garamond, a face derived from the work of the French type designer and punchcutter Claude Garamond (1499-1561), and printed letterpress by Jaromír Novák. Photogravures on frontispiece and throughout, all guarded by tissue.
Binding: Half brown morocco and dark brown textured paste paper boards. Top edges gilt. Five raised bands on spine; title and author gilt in one compartment. Marbled endpapers. Black linen velvet-lined clamshell box, with title and author gilt on spine.
