Description

In the days after President Trump’s inauguration, a paradigm-shifting exchange took place. Chuck Todd asked White House adviser Kellyanne Conway why the President insisted upon disseminating “provable falsehoods.” They weren’t, she said, they were “alternative facts.” We live in a world of extremes, where every side is given a podium, and the alternatives crash into other. In the past, debate usually involved the question, “What do the facts mean?” President Trump has not participated in this grand discourse. Rather, his dissemination of falsehood has forced the conversation to become, “What are the Facts?” In this milieu, we seek to participate in the reclamation of the word Fact—to return it to its mantel. Some things truly are “alternative facts,” that is, opposing claims on the truth. The alternative facts of the Trump administration discombobulate the term itself. That said, there are some truths so convincing, so compelling, that we reel when we learn that they are not, in fact, true. These, truly, must be dragged into the light. Therefore, it is with a belief in the relevance of truth that we present ten broadsides of Alternative Facts.
