When we first started to think about launching a series of beautifully printed short works, celebrated journalist, author, and good friend Michael Shnayerson told me that one of his favorite stories ever was Peter Matthiessen’s Late in the Season. As it turned out, Michael was friends with Matthiessen and was able to persuade him to let us print the story.
Matthiessen was a great manipulator of language, and a craftsman of the written word. But part of his genius was that as often as not what he left unsaid, unwritten… was the real takeaway. This incredible power of the unspoken over the imagination got us thinking about two other exceptional stories that communicate below the surface of the narrative: Ernest Hemingway’s Hills Like White Elephants and Anthony Doerr’s The Hunter’s Wife. Both of these stories similarly leave you transformed by the journey of reading them… while at the same time compelling you to wonder what happened. All three of these amazing stories explore the importance of trust particularly when it involves people we are close to and can communicate with, without saying a word.
