Description

James Joyce was an Irish author whose most celebrated works include Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and most infamously, Finnegans Wake. Joyce was a pioneer of the modernist movement, completely transforming literature’s expression of symbolism, identity, memory, and consciousness. Though not during his lifetime, Joyce has since been widely regarded as a literary genius who keenly drew insight into the crossroads of philosophy, literature, and psychology.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1882, Joyce studied at the University College Dublin before spending much of his life in European cities such as Zurich and Paris, where he published A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Finnegans Wake. Although his works were often considered unnecessarily challenging and controversial, they eventually earned widespread, enduring acclaim for their immense depth and originality. Despite being plagued by various personal hardships throughout his life, including over a dozen unanesthetized eye surgeries for his failing vision and his daughter’s diagnosis of schizophrenia, Joyce remained resilient and used his experiences as inspiration for his final novel: Finnegans Wake.
