Speech Sounds
Published in 1983, “Speech Sounds” tells the story of a world divided by disease. Those who survive the affliction are left without the power of speech, or else without the ability to read and write, becoming cut off from friends and neighbors by the profound inability to communicate. This Hugo Award-winning short story is a poignant reminder that we must continue, despite unprecedented obstacles, to communicate and connect, or else be left speechless in a world divided.
