Written in 1910 and published in 1915, Prufrock is the earliest of Eliot’s professional poems. Upon reading it, Ezra Pound boldly claimed that it was “the best poem I have yet had or seen from an American”, and though many at the time regarded the work as outlandish, it has since come to be regarded as one of the quintessential texts of the modernist movement.
