Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë (Half-Leather)
Wuthering Heights, Emily Brontë's only novel, was originally published under the pen name, Ellis Bell. It is a stark depiction of the insidious nature of jealousy, vengeance, and the class differences that shape the lives of all the characters from one generation to the next. Controversial in its time, it is now regarded as a great English classic.
Half-leather, bound in purple Morocco and purple paste paper.
Wuthering Heights was controversial and polarizing upon its first publication due to its stark depictions of gender inequality, class issues, cruelty, jealously, and vengefulness on the quiet English moors. The relationships between the main characters are a mess of entwined family relations, affection, and hate that are passed on through the generations. Hindley's cruel treatment of Heathcliff due to his lowly status, and Catherine's marriage for social standing instead of for love, poison the lives of all their descendants when Heathcliff turns to bitter revenge and manipulation. Nelly, the serving girl of the house, is the narrator, deemed reliable but not as removed as she would think, and recounts the sad cycle of social prejudice.
